Empathy is the action of understanding, being aware of, and being sensitive to the experience of another. Sometimes people begin therapy feeling vulnerable, unsure and exposed, so I work to hold a kind and compassionate space and always ensure my clients set the pace. I believe that developing a deeper awareness of our feelings, patterns of behaviour and our way of relating to other people, can help us to understand what could be changed, and can also help us feel more in control of our own emotions, developing a closer and more authentic relationship with ourselves and others.
My motivation is to provide a relationship whereby people can safely explore their inner world and become empowered to live a full and authentic life. I try to see the world through my client’s eyes and perspective and to understand each individual’s needs. We can then work together to provide a safe environment and assist every person to find clarity on the issues that arise.
Effective aligns with success. As a scientist-practitioner, I strongly value treatment that is supported by research evidence. It is important that I invest time and energy in attending training and conferences to update my practice with the latest research and treatment in my field of expertise.
Effective embodies the essence of evaluation and integrity. In my therapy, I invite people to observe their behaviour and thinking patterns, and to assess the origin and function, and then to create committed actions that can generate positive change.
As the saying goes “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn” – I incorporate elements into my therapy to help my clients to experience what they need to find ways to change and grow. Some of my treatment modalities go beyond talking therapy and it includes stress release exercises/ movement, exposure therapy, chair work, and others.
Experiential also refers to the healthy therapeutic relationship that supports the corrective experience. I believe in creating a space for people to explore, push, and struggle with their deepest fears and stay with them through those strong emotions. It is always rewarding when I see these processes from our sessions translated into the real world as people start to form secure attachments in their life.
Ethical stands for accessible services to people who are in need and also, only providing services that I am clinically trained. Accessibility refers to good continuity of care (regular session without long wait times) and pro-bono consultation to people living in developing countries, who are in need of my expertise. I actively seek philanthropic projects where I can give back to society.
If the presenting issues are outside my expertise, I will endeavour to connect people to an appropriate and suitable therapist. I understand that people have often gone through a lot of difficulties before they decide to seek help, therefore, it is important to make sure they feel supported in searching for the right therapist.
